What is a CGPA Calculator?

A CGPA Calculator is an online tool that helps students compute their Cumulative Grade Point Average by entering the grade points and credits for each subject. CGPA is the primary academic performance metric used by universities across India — under the 10-point scale recommended by UGC and AICTE, and followed by institutions affiliated with Anna University, VTU, SPPU, Mumbai University, and most central and state universities.

Unlike a simple average of marks, CGPA is a weighted average — subjects with higher credit hours carry more weight in the final calculation. This calculator handles that weighting automatically, so you get an accurate CGPA and its equivalent percentage in seconds.

CGPA Formula

CGPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Total Credit Hours)

Example:

SubjectGrade PointCreditsGrade Point × Credits
Mathematics9436
Physics8324
Programming10440
English7214
Lab9218
Total—15132

CGPA = 132 ÷ 15 = 8.8

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is CGPA?

CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a weighted average of grade points earned across all subjects in a semester or academic year, where the weight of each subject is its credit hours. It is the standard academic performance metric in most Indian universities on a 10-point grading scale, as recommended by the UGC.

How do I convert CGPA to percentage?

The UGC-recommended formula is: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. For example, a CGPA of 8.2 = 8.2 × 9.5 = 77.9%. However, some universities like Mumbai University, Anna University, and VTU use their own specific conversion tables. Always check your university’s official method for accurate results.

What is a good CGPA in Indian universities?

On a 10-point scale, a CGPA of 8.0 and above is considered very good and makes students competitive for campus placements, higher studies, and scholarships. For tier-1 company placements and premium PG programs, a CGPA of 7.5 or above is typically the minimum threshold. Above 9.0 is exceptional.

How is CGPA different from GPA?

GPA typically refers to the grade point average for a single semester (called SGPA in India), while CGPA is the cumulative average across all semesters completed up to the current point in the degree programme.

Can I improve my CGPA in the last semester?

Yes, but the impact depends on how many semesters you have already completed. Since CGPA is cumulative, the more semesters that have passed, the harder it is to shift the final CGPA significantly. Performing well in high-credit subjects in final semesters gives the best opportunity to raise CGPA before graduation.
